Come Meet Us!

We will again be at First Friday in Phoenix on May 7th. We are always at Blueberry Deluxe Boutique on 7th Ave and Montecito.

We will also be at this same location the next morning for a benefit dog wash. Cute pups and vegan goods, does it get any better!?? Well it does! There will be fun things for kids and adults to do from getting your face painted to dog adoptions!

Please come support the various rescues that will be involved, including Ironwood Pig Sanctuary.

Pinky Gave Bran a Chance!

I would like to make a follow up post regarding the bran muffins I made for Pinky here at Ironwood. He loves them! I put the plate down in front of him and he dove right it. This will be good start to getting fiber/bran into his diet. I will be making more tonight. I think I will add some fiber powder this time.

Mr. Pig is another pig here who has stopped eating the normal grain. He ate 3 of the muffins this morning :)

Throw it to the Hogs

Most of you know that I, Taryn, live and work at Ironwood Pig Sanctuary. Most of the pigs here eat the swine feed we have, which is a grain. However, once in a while a pig will stop eating this for one reason or another. It is up to us to find out why and what they will eat.

Pinky is a very special boy. He has stolen many hearts. He has an infection in his jaw that too many pigs get. He stopped eating his normal food at the beginning of this last winter. He has been eating special foods that we give him and often enjoys when it is hand fed. We are more than willing to do so! We've been giving him tater tots, pasta noodles, melons, veggie burgers, and more.

Recently it has become apparent that he needs more fiber in his diet. Normally we would just add fiber powder or wheat bran to the food. This is trickier with Pinky since he has the special foods. Having a mind for baking I immediately thought of bran muffins! Pinky does like things such as pancakes so I have a feeling he will enjoy the muffins. If he doesn't I'm sure the staff and I will help him out.

Here is the recipe I came up with tonight:
1 1/2 c wheat bran
1c wheat flour
1c soy milk
2Tbs oil
egg replacer = to one egg
2/3c brown sugar
2Tbs apple sauce
1tsp baking soda
1tsp baking powder
1/2tsp salt

*of course you can add raisins, nuts, etc

Bake for 10-15 minutes at 375. I was able to make 12 regular sized muffins and one mini loaf.

The SMVO Got Lost in LA!

Yes we did, more than once even! However, we still found our way to My Vegan. This is an all vegan restaurant in Pasadena, CA. http://my-vegan.com/

We first went there Monday night after spending the day at Six Flags. We were incredibly hungry and ready for some awesome vegan food. We saw that My Vegan had received 5 cows on happycow.net and wasn't too far from our hotel.

When we first arrived and saw the menu we couldn't believe all of the different choices. We decided tostart off with an appetizer, chicken nuggets. These were very yummy and the dipping sauce was perfect.

For her main meal Vanessa chose the Vegan Slam Pancake. This comes with 2 large pancakes with vegan margarine, 3 pieces of fake bacon and a good sized serving of tofu scramble. This was deeeelicious!!

I decided to have 2 appetizers, fried vegetable dumplings and BBQ tofu. The dumplings were very good! I was happily surprised that they weren't too fried, just right. The BBQ tofu was delicious as well. I would love to see it in a bun for a sandwhich!

We enjoyed the food and service here so much that we decided to go back the following day for lunch. We started with some cheesy potatoes. These were very tasty and cooked just right.
For the main meal I ordered the Vegan Slam Pancake and Vanessa opted for the orange chicken. The chicken pieces were larger than the usual orange chicken you find at vegan restaurants. This is also served with a large serving of brown rice.

Our overall experiences with My Vegan were very positive. The food was always served quickly and tasted great. The servers and other staff were very polite and attentive. I would definitely recommend My Vegan to my friends, and strangers. They are open Sun-Thurs 10:30am-9:30pm and Fri-Sat 10:30am-10:00pm. They also deliver and do take out orders.

Easter Treats

Vanessa and I decided to whip up some goodies for Easter. Vanessa ventured into the world of gluten free and made chocolate gluten free cupcakes with maple peanut butter fudge frosting. These are ridiculously delicious! She used a crunchy peanut butter which was a big hit with many.

I decided on baking sugar cookies in the shapes of bunnies, chickies and flowers. I stayed with pastel colors for the frosting.

Both treats usually require a glass of soy milk ;)
